INTERVIEWS...

We asked several randomly picked UGA students what their thoughts were on some of the ads we found in popular magazines (the 4 on the welcome page). Here are some of their responses...

*Abbreviations for the ads... OP = Cointreau Orange Peel, SV = Skyy Vodka Pictures, OC = Olympus Camera Motorcycle, SK = Sketchers Car*

OP: "I don't notice what the advertisement is for..."

SK: "You don't notice the shoes."

Additional Comments:

"Images help sell the product. It shows women in a condescending way, but the women do it to themselves. It's using women, but they let it happen."

What do I look like?
I know that’s not real!
There’s no one that perfect
No one with so much appeal
She’s pretty, yes, but flawless I doubt
Her hair is the best
Her body is great
But, come on now, she’s not better than the rest!
I’ve got curves, like a real woman should
I like what a 10 can do
Why want to be a size 3?
As long as my man says “ooh”
I love my body, no matter what those ads say
Please believe there’ll be no starvation, just healthy living here
Gotta be happy with what God gave

OP: "Slut. Why is she dressed in an orange peel?"

SV: Wow, she's really pretty."

Additional Comments:

"Advertisers main goal is to sell the product. But, what catches our eye is the picture, not the product."

OP: "Wow. She's really skinny."

OC: "What is this advertising?"

SV: "This is bothersome..."

SK: "Does this have to do with shoes?"

In response to a un-objectifying Nabisco ad..."Colorful. Fully dressed. Actually showing what they're trying to advertise."

Additional Comments:

"I'm more concerned with the image than the product. Women are objectified and it's bothersome because they let themselves do it."

OP: "I just want to eat an orange."

SV: "Scandalous."

OC: "The motorcycle draws me in."

Additional Comments:

"If sex sells, it sells. Guys are used in the same way."

Sagar Patel

Age 20

Atlanta, GA

Genetics Major

OP: "Hot."

SV: "Different."

SK: "Christina, very submissive."

OC: "Next generation."

Additional Comments:

"I'm more concerned with the image (presented), than what the product is. It makes the advertisers money (using women in ads)."
